Introduction to the Project
The COVID-19 (CoronaVirus) pandemic has placed numerous challenges before world powers, before various governments, before various existing systems, before businesses, financial systems and institutions, in fact humanity is about re-thinking every adaptive method of leveraging. Shops and businesses, public services, corporations, financial institutions, government services are being seriously impacted and challenged by this pandemic. Educational systems, judicial systems religious and other systems are now expected to develop forward thinking strategies on how to leverage and deliver their services if at all they still want to stay on in existence. After this pandemic, the world and its existing systems will never be the same again. After this pandemic, various systems cannot emerge with the same pre-COVID-19 mentalities and attitudes anymore. In fact, the whole world should emerge from this with new strategies. The most imminent thing to do which has become the daily slogan of everyone is social distancing. How can world systems obey social distancing and still remain valid? How can businesses respect social distancing and still remain in business? In the same manner, how can governments, and their various systems, educational, judicial etc. respect social distancing and still do what they are expected to do for the good of humanity. One of such systems impacted is the Educational system. During the crisis, Western countries have easily adopted forward looking strategies to cope with and maintain their educational systems. That is why educational platforms have witnessed untold traffic coming from every corner of Europe and America. Educational Platforms such as Moodle, Edmondo etc. have witness unprecedented traffic as they are being exploited on a daily basis.
On the other hand, African countries and systems have simply been taken aback and found wanting because their leadership had never taken the advancement of Education seriously. Comparatively, when we observe (as in the case of Cameroon where war is ravaging in the North West and South West, in the North and Extreme North and where the Adamawa and Eastern regions are plagued by lack of basic amenities such as electricity, water and lack of forward looking educational systems, all the government could do was to bring teachers to teach subjects on the lone National Television network talk less of creating even an educational channel for this purpose. This to say the least is extremely ridiculous for a country that claims to reach emergence in 2035. However, Cameroon is not alone. Countless African countries have simply stopped education because ‘social distancing’ cannot be practiced within the framework of existing infrastructure.
The Raison D’Etre of the Online System
It is on this basis that while we were observing the ‘stay-at-home’ global advice, we had to set our minds thinking of how to move Africa forward especially from the educational point of view. The challenge of staying at home and still be educated, can be solved if African governments were willing to do so without any exorbitant costs. But we cannot be waiting on them if we must move Africa forward.
The Ubuntu Online University Project is an immediate as well as a long-term solution to the educational gap created by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have simply conceived this project, with the Higher Educational Institutions of Africa in mind and we have consciously made it a robust and scalable system in all its ramifications.
We are expecting the various universities in Africa to line up behind this project to let it grow and expand as rapidly as possible by taking advantage of its powerful and scalable properties. Moreover, it is a win-win-win situation for all the universities of Africa and all the lecturers of Higher Institutions of learning that exist. That is why, conceiving this system with the whole of Africa in mind, we made it once for all powerfully secured, extremely robust and flexible in all its functionalities to accommodate even the most uninformed of all the lectures, institutions, governments and systems in Africa. Everyone of them has been taken into consideration.
This robust platform has been conceived to accommodate all forms of courses in every format, be they in video courses, audio (podcasts), PowerPoint presentations, documents in PDF formats etc. It is conceived to accommodate both still and live courses so that students and lecturers can attend classes live online or download and benefit from the various published courses on the platform. It is conceived to accommodate all forms of traffic without limit and hopefully, everyone of Africa’s Higher Institutions of Learning without exceptions can immediately take advantage of it. It is an open-ended project because it is purposefully intended to accommodate all languages, and milieu of Africa.
Course Levels and Descriptions
We are proud and excited to present this potent educational tool to all of Africa and it is our hope that everyone will benefit from it. This is the first of Africa’s most extended educational learning tool and platform and consists of course at the following levels:
- Higher National Diploma (HND & HPD) Courses
- Bachelor’s Degree Courses
- Master’s Degree Courses
- PHD (Doctoral) Courses
- Diploma & Certificate Courses
- Language Courses
- The LIVE University – Attend LIVE Lectures
What are the benefits of this system
As an LMS, it satisfies two essential needs of a reputable educational system. First, it acts as a repertoire of courses for tertiary education. The students can fall back on these in times like this and are still able to fulfil their study hours. Secondly, it satisfies the need of being in class. The LIVE part is the most fascinating part of the university system. Lecturers and various universities and institutes of higher learning can freely get on the system and organize live lectures in the same manner as they would do in their various campuses. The system is robust and scalable that it satisfies the needs of a real classroom encounter and so without physical contact, the students can still meet with the lecturers through video conferencing, listen to lectures as they would in physical lecture halls and the most interesting is that they (both the lecturer and the student) can do so from the quiet of their homes or from their study rooms at home.
